Further I would encourage kids to make money rather than being given it. Making money builds confidence and gives a child a real example of creating change in their own lives.

All good advice. One of the things that happens, though, when you start talking openly with your kids about your investments: One day they ask you how much you make.

Do you tell them, or not? Their friends will end up knowing, among other things. There are big tradeoffs, no matter what your decision is.

As a college professor and journalist who specializes in teaching kids about money management, I do think it's a decision you should make before they ask. Nothing worse than sitting there, stumbling over an answer.
My blog, AskAnne, has a post about this subject, and the pros and cons of telling kids how much you earn.
