Take some snacks or a lunch with you and let them run around in a semi-controlled environment while you play with them or catch up on some reading. As for the adults..... perhaps I am a bit old fashioned, but going bowling, the YMCA, and other "just get out" type stuff that is not too expensive can be fun. But I also LOVE to haunt used book stores, so for me, it's a relatively easy existance.... ;) For young kids, something relatively simple are the play areas at your local mall.
