I've recently started the habit of shredding all of my junk mail. Even if it just has my address on it, I shred it because sometimes it takes only minimal information for someone to steal your identity. I recently read a great article on document security and it had a good sized list of things you should get in the habit of shredding.

I just got a letter from my employer that my information was stolen in a company laptop. Just goes to show you can do only so much and still be at risk by third-parties. I even wrote a post on my blog about the experience. Great post thanks for the tips.

Great post! I'm definitely going to use this info to protect myself against identity theft.

Last year, a good friend of mine had her identity stolen by the assistant in her Doctor's office. The woman took my friend's Social Security number, name and address and applied for credit cards in the same name, same social security card but different address.

After a few months, my friend started getting late payment notices from these credit cards. And although she did everything that she was supposed to do AFTER her identity was stolen, she's still dealing with the after effects today. It was a nightmare for her.

So, I tried to get off of every mailing list I was on. I shred everything with my name/address/social security number on it before I throw it in the garbage. Whenever I buy something online, I use a pre-paid cash card that I get at my local check cashing place, which I pay cash for. This way, my SS# or bank account isn't attached to it. And I use a special email that is just for online purchases.

I try take all of the other known steps to fight identity theft. But I'm still scared that it can happen to me.

Thanks for the post. It's great. Keep posting.
