[...] When I left the bank and decided to get an easier job (the high-end liquor/wine retailer), I noticed a ton of check cashers purchasing large amounts of alcohol and cigarettes. Originally, I was kind of sad for the individuals that were stuck on a fixed budget, but this brought a new light to the situation. You cannot spend money on liquor or cigarettes when you can’t even afford car insurance! Stop smoking and drinking and make your life better. They would usually spend about $50 a week on booze and cigarettes which turns into a yearly amount of $2600.
[...] In my Festival of Frugality debut I contributed an article on how I like to look at my saving in relation to my spending. This approach can help us realize when we’re spending dramatically more than we save. It can also encourage us if we feel we’re not saving very much. For example, if we don’t have much money to work with and can’t save very much. As long as the amount we save compares well with how much we spend then we’re doing just fine! I would add that whatever the savings amount, one should take that amount out of the paycheck first, deposit it, and not touch it(for any reason:-)
