Discover Card Holiday Deals Promotion – Up to $100 Cashback

November 16, 2008

The Discover card holiday promotion gives back $20 for every $200 spent on your card in the form of a $20 gift card.  What that boils down to is that your Discover Card can become a 10% cash back card from November 1 to January 4, 2009.  That is more than three times the best cash back rate for other types of cards.

Discover Credit Cards

The holiday cash back promotion is available for all Discover credit cards, here is a look at some of the cards you might consider:

Discover Miles Card

Discover Miles Card is a travel rewards card that allows you to earn double miles on purchases up to $3000 in travel-related purchases and a point-per-dollar for general purchases. Unlike other travel rewards cards, the Discover Miles Card offers 1,000 bonus miles a month if the card is used at least once a month.

Discover Open Road Credit Card

Discover Open RoadNo longer available card is a gas rewards card that offers a full 5% on gas and car maintenance purchases, as well as 1% cash back on other purchases, plus an additional .25% on purchases made at warehouses and discount stores.  One of the best gas credit cards, it’s not known for it’s rewards when shopping retail but if you already own one it can earn you some cash back if you use it for holiday shopping.

Discover Motiva Credit Card

Discover Motiva Card is a rewards-based credit card that combines a low introductory APR, rebate points, and a unique pay-on-time bonus if you pay your bills on time for six months straight. When you pay your Motiva credit card bill six months in a row, you’ll receive an additional bonus of the card’s current finance charges. Put simply, cardholders can expect to get back interest payments twice a year when bills are paid on time.

Discover More Card

Discover More credit card combines unlimited rebates that never expire with a full 5% cash back rebate for Discover’s Get More merchants, making it one of the best cash back credit cards on the market. In addition to having no annual fee, the Discover More card also allows you to exchange your cash rebates for gift cards at up to twice the value of your cash back bonus, sometimes doubling the amount of your rewards.

Discover Holiday Promotion Limits

The Mall Promotion does have one caveat: cardholders are only eligible for 5 gift cards per credit card account, or $100 cash back.  That amounts to $1000 in spending, I imagine the average spending on Christmas gifts is less than this, especially in a year when people are looking for ways to save money.  If you happen to have more than one Discover Card in your wallet, each card will qualify separately for the promotion.

How to Use the Holiday Mall Promotion

Save those receipts.  You must show the mall’s customer service department your receipts and your Discover Card before January 9th of next year to qualify for the gift cards.  You can either do this all in one go or every time you spend $200.  Keep in mind that not all malls are participating in the program, so make sure that the mall participating in the program by contacting the mall’s customer service representative.

Earn Extra Gift Cards

There are some unique ways to use the plan.  Many promotional offers will say that they cannot be combined with other offers, but this is not true for the Holiday Promotion.  For example, Discover Cards offer higher cash back (or gift card) bonus for purchases at certain merchants.  These merchants often have their own gift card promotions, so you can get two for one gift card promotions by using your Discover Card.  Given the fact that gift cards make a good Christmas gift, you’re killing a lot of birds with one stone: both saving money and saving time on Christmas shopping.

In many rewards programs you have to search through the fine print to find the catch.  The only catch here is that you can only spend $1000 a card.  As people tend to split up Christmas shopping between both cash and credit, you probably won’t hit that figure and you’ll be getting back a sizable gift card for purchases you’d be making regardless of a promotion.
