I just read a story on not so much hot job markets, but places wherre college grads are flocking. I think DC and NY were toward the top, naturally. More people means bigger market, and let's face it, the job is the thing. That's why the gift I'm giving some grads (it depends on circumstance; if they have a job they don't need this!) is a great book on finding a job, Job Coach for Young Professionals. It covers everything from assessing skills and work values, to getting ready for the interview, to how to conduct a thorough search and -- interestingly -- how to prepare for that first day. And yes, it covers thank you notes -- those are very important and way too many grads don't realize that!

It's good to impress on graduates that a little goes a long way. Doing little things like writing thank you notes really make you stand out. Also, why not get personal "calling cards" like in times past - it's a wonderful way to start promoting yourself!
